About the Next Chapter Detroit Archive

Since January 2014, has brought audiences the work of the Detroit Journalism Cooperative, a consortium of nonprofit media in southeast Michigan. The site presents DJC articles, radio and television programming, and digital work, including live blogging of the trial, original document presentation, photos and other unique features.

Part news site, part DJC showcase, part archive of the historic case, the work remains online and is searchable here. Find key court filings, analysis of developments in the case, stories of the people affected, accounts of speeches by key figures in the case including the judge and the emergency manager, and much more.

WDET’s Sandra Svoboda worked as the “bankruptcy blogger,” curating, contributing to DJC partner outlets, and appearing regularly on WDET and at community meetings to help audiences understand the complexities of the case. This work has been recognized by the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Society of Professional Journalists – metro Detroit chapter, and the Wayne State University Department of Political Science, which named Svoboda as its alumnae of the year from the public administration program.

Funding for this project made possible by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Renaissance Journalism’s Michigan Reporting Initiative and the Ford Foundation.
